OMN racks up regional wins
Orange Media Network students have received three regional wins and several finalist honors from the Society of Professional Journalists.
SPJ Region 10, which is composed of chapters in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, recognizes the best in collegiate journalism. The awards were announced April 19.
OMN received wins for Best Ongoing Student Magazine (Beaver's Digest), Photo Illustration (Fern Barber, "Warning signs of abusive relationships") and Data Visualization (Alan Nguyen, "Possession laws in Oregon"). The three entries will be advanced to the national competition, results of which will be announced later this spring.

OMN also had a finalist placing in the Photo Illustration category by Jason May and Ashton Bisner of The Daily Barometer for "127th Rivalry Game" .
Emma Coke, editor in chief of Beaver's Digest, said she was happy to hear of the award and credited training and work at OMN with inspiring her to apply for the leadership position. The Portland resident will graduate this summer with a degree in marine studies and will spend the summer as an intern with an online news site in Ashland through the Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism. She said she hopes to work as an environmental journalist as a career.
"(Through OMN) I feel I gained confidence as a writer and as a person, which led me to think about becoming editor in chief," she said.

Orange Media Network is a national award-winning student media program at Oregon State University. It is home to six student-run mediums: The Daily Barometer, the student newspaper; Beaver's Digest, the lifestyle magazine; DAMchic, the fashion magazine; Prism, the arts and literature magazine; KBVR-FM, the student radio station; and KBVR-TV, the student TV station.
