Using the Metals/Jewelry Studio
To use the studio independently, there are 3 levels of access. All levels require that you take an Orientation with the Jewelry Tech (available from the front desk), have a current Craft Center membership(Link downloads document), and sign a Metals/Jewelry user agreement form(Link is external). If you come in during Tech Time, the jewelry tech can not only work with you on your metal-smithing needs, but also evaluate what level you are at.
- Metals Basic: you can check out a jewelry kit to use.
- Metals 2: you can also check out some of the specialized tools/equipment from the red cart.
- Metals 3: you have reached the Torch Level! You will need to have a buddy with you when you use it, just in case. But that buddy doesn't need to be jewelry trained, just be present with you.
Metals/Jewelry Policies
- Members will clean up after themselves, this means; removing all work from the pickle, wiping work areas, the sink, and returning the jewelry cart and any tools to the front desk.
- Begin cleaning up 15 minutes BEFORE the Craft Center closes to ensure you will be finished by closing.
- Please do not handle others’ work.
- Please be respectful of others and their personal space.
- Please do not discuss inappropriate topics or use profanity while in the studio.
- Be respectful of classes using the space, this means: clean & vacate scheduled class area 15 minutes prior to the class start time.
- Do not use the torches without another person present, this person does not need to be knowledgeable about the jewelry area.
- Recognize that the pickle is caustic, and avoid getting it on my skin or clothing, or on the surrounding area.
- Recognize that flux is caustic, and avoid getting it on my skin or clothing, or on the surrounding area.
- Do not adjust the pressures on the gas tanks.
- Recognize that there are materials that are harmful if inhaled (like flux), and make sure that the vents are on and running when soldering.
- Renew my membership and locker before the end of each term or remove the locker contents, with the understanding that the lockers will be cleaned out over break.
- Attend an orientation about the studio at the beginning of each term, or participate in a class.
- Report any mechanical issues or trouble to the cc staff.
- Do not cut with the saw directly on mandrels.
- Only use a hammer/mallet in the Bang Room, closing the door while in there, leaving it open when leaving.
